Spring 2008 Workshops

The spring workshops this year will be held at Hubbard Lodge in Fahnestock State Park on April 12-13. And again at Newark Watershed Visitors Center in NJ on April 26. Reserve a place now - details will be available later. Advanced skills workshops will be held at Bear Mountain. See overview information on the Bear Mountain Project.

Conference club and individual members, as well as non-members, who are interested in acquiring or upgrading a working knowledge of basic trail maintenance or construction and restoration, are welcome. There will be lectures indoors and field work on hiking trails. Advance registration is required and class size is limited. Take-home materials will be provided and an information packet will be sent to all registrants shortly before the workshop dates. This workshop will be held rain or shine.

Workshop details are:

Saturday, March 29 - Bear Mountain Overview and Orientation

Time: 9:00
Location: Bear Mountain State Park main parking lot
Coordinator: Matt Townsend, townsend@nynjtc.org

Sunday, March 30 AT Lands Monitor Training Workshop

Time: 9:00
Location: RPH Shelter (Just off Taconic Parkway, Dutchess County, NY)
Instructors: Ron Rosen (845-454-4936) or Jim Haggett (845-462-2893) for more information.

Monitor training is required for all AT monitors. This workshop will also focus on recruiting new monitors as there are several vacancies. Come and find out if monitoring would be interesting to you. You should be comfortable bushwhacking. You are rarely more than 500 feet from the AT so you are not likely to get lost. The training includes lots of compass work and good maps so you always know where you are.

Location: Fahnestock State Park (classroom) and Wonder Lake State Park (field work), both in NY
Instructors: Eddie Walsh and Larry Wheelock

Saturday, April 12 - Trail Maintenance 101-

Coordinator: Gary Haugland

This session will provide training in basic techniques, maintenance standards, the types of problems you may encounter on the trail, and how to solve them. Sign up for this session if you are interested in becoming a maintainer or want to enhance your knowledge of the subject. Please remember to dress for outside work in clothes that you do not mind getting wet or dirty; bring lunch, water, and any other drink or snack you fancy. If you have hand clippers, loppers (long-handled branch cutters), small bow or pruning saws, bring them.

Saturday, April 12 - Stone Splitting
