Fox Hollow Lean-to and Privy Work Trip - June 17th - 19th

Trail Conference volunteer Eric Friedman, who just finished the work on the Devil's Acre Lean-to and privy, will be leading this worktrip scheduled for the weekend of June 17-19 in collaboration with members of the 3500 Club. Volunteers can come for a day, or stay the weekend at the lean-to with the crew.

 What we will be doing:

  • Construction of a new privy, over a new hole recently dug
  • Stonework  - Complete recent spring improvements, by covering new pipes with field stone
  • Stonework - In front of Lean-to. Place flat stones to make a dry surface to stand on.
  • Rebuild Fire Pit - It needs to be cleaned out and rebuilt with stones found on site.
  • Help carrying materials in and out, moving stone and earth, and other small details.
  • Experience is helpful, but not necessary. Hard work and a willingness to help is more important

Who to contact: If you are able to help out with the project, please email Eric Friedman, [email protected]Specify which day / days you are available. Please include cell and home phone numbers, and where you are coming from for possible carpooling purposes. This will allow Eric to notify participants with more specifics and any updates, such as weather cancellations. Feel free to contact Eric with any questions by email, text or call 845-594-3817.

The Hike in/Water/Shelter: In addition to bringing in any personal gear for the day or overnight, your help will be needed to carry in and out tools and some materials. Participants coming later in the weekend may be asked to carry in supplies from the back of Eric’s black and gray truck. We will hike in from the north end of the Giant’s Ledge- Panther-Fox Hollow Trail. It’s an easy hike to the lean-to, 0.4 mile up hill on an old road. The spring should supply us with water and the shelter is only three years old. There is no privy.

When to meet: Friday June 17th. 10am You can either come for the day or stay at the shelter to make a fun volunteer trip out of the experience! Eric is likely to spend Friday and Saturday night. Those coming early on Friday day will meet at 10am . Those coming later will check for written notes, concerning what to carry in from Eric’s black and gray truck and will hike in on their own.

Where to meet: At the Trailhead Parking for Giant’s Ledge-Panther-Fox Hollow Trail. The trailhead is on Fox Hollow Road, off NYS Route 28 a few miles west of Phoenicia.  There is most likely no cell service in the area. Details will be finalized with the volunteers who are coming and their preferences. Carpooling is encouraged.

Minors under 18 will need to fill out a guardian consent form, with a parent or guardian present during the worktrip.

What to bring: Lunch and snacks, sturdy shoes, water (also available from the spring), safety glasses, gloves, bug dope, water purification if desired and a headlight for the hike out. If you’ll be spending the night, bring your necessary overnight gear and food. Digging tools etc. will be supplied. Let Eric know if you have battery operated tools for use at the trailhead parking area or at the lean-to (Eric has 18v Makita tools, bringing extra Makita 18v batteries are helpful).

Thank you again for your desire to help out, and we’re looking forward to seeing you at the shelter!
