Bouton Memorial Lean-to Work Trip - October 14 to 16, October 21 to 23, and November 4 to 6
Trail Conference Volunteer Eric Friedman, Shelter Caretaker of 12 years and lifelong carpenter is looking to improve the user experience at the Bouton Memorial Lean-to . Volunteers can come for a day, or make this a fun overnight trip!
What we will be doing:
This beautiful new shelter was flown in by helicopter and assembled by the DEC Operations Crew, last fall.
During the recent worktrips we have rebuilt and stained the privy, installed oakum with sapling cover between the logs, stained the shelter, and started building a fieldstone patio between the shelter and the fire pit. We are returning this 3rd. weekend to complete the stone work and do some general site improvements.
Who to contact: If you are able to help out with the project, please email Eric Friedman, [email protected]. Specify which day / days you are available. Please include cell and home phone numbers, and where you are coming from for possible carpooling purposes. This will allow Eric to notify participants with more specifics and any updates, such as weather cancellations. Feel free to contact Eric with any questions by email, text or call 845-594-3817.
The Hike in/Water/Shelter: The hike to the shelter is 3.6 miles, with 1400ft. elevation gain. from the Denning Rd. Trailhead. In addition to bringing in any personal gear for the day or an overnight, (a head lamp for the hike out), your help will be needed to carry in and out tools and some materials. Participants coming later in the weekend may be asked to carry in supplies from the back of Eric’s truck. The spring before the shelter should supply us with water. The shelter should be available to sleep in during the evenings, but may need to be vacated during work hours.
When to meet: Friday thru Sunday November 4-6. You can either come for the day or stay at the shelter to make a fun volunteer trip out of the experience! Eric will spend Friday and Saturday nights.
Where to meet: At the Denning Rd. Trailhead Parking for the Phoenicia-East Branch Trail. The trailhead is at the northern end of Denning Road, in Ulster County. Those coming early on Friday day will meet at 9 or 10am, time TBD. Those coming latter will check for written notes, concerning what to carry in from Eric’s car or truck and will hike in on their own. No cell service at the trailhead however there is service at the shelter. Details will be finalized with the volunteers who are coming and their preferences prior to the trip. Carpooling is encouraged.
What to bring: Check weather conditions. Lunch and snacks, sturdy shoes, water, safety glasses, gloves, and a headlight for the hike out. If you’ll be spending the night, bring your necessary overnight gear and food. A combination of personal and shared meal, as preferred. Tools etc. will be supplied.
Thank you again for your desire to help out, and we’re looking forward to seeing you there!
