Swamper Safety Education

This is a new workshop for swampers (people who assist certified chainsawyers by monitoring the site for safety), with an experimental curriculum. We will teach swampers how to create the zone of safety within which the sawyer can operate, how to  keep visitors away from the work site, as well as how to help the sawyer by moving branches and cut pieces of tree trunks off the trail. A swamper role is critical for the sawyer and an important part of that team.  You will learn most of what is in the curriculum for sawyers (other than the actual use of the chainsaw). Eventually, this course may be a prerequisite for the chainsaw course. As such, taking the course will help you decide whether chainsawing is something you want to do. All saw parties are required to have two or more people as part of the group, only one of whom is required to be a B level certified sawyer. Sawyers are required to be certified in first aid and CPR, but they are the more likely one to get hurt, so we also want swampers to be certified in first aid and CPR.   There will be a short indoor presentation, and then everyone will split into groups, with a sawyer and a swamper trainer for each 5-8 people.   NOTE:  Wear trail work clothes, as well as hiking boots or heavy shoes (no sneakers, sandals or flip-flops). Bring work gloves and a hard hat (if you have them otherwise we will provide these items).  Also bring your lunch, snack and beverage.      Location details and directions will be sent upon registration.     Completion of this course will give you priority in getting into the sawyer course.
