This outdoor training session covers an introduction to the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference and provides the skills necessary to maintain a hiking trail so it is easily passable and harmonious with its surroundings.
Through field study, students will learn assessment of trail conditions, clearing, blazing, proper use of tools and how to report any trail problems they may come across on their segment of trail. Be prepared to spend your time on the trail and expect to walk at least three miles on a trail of moderate difficulty.
No previous experience is necessary and all are welcome to attend to learn about the Trail Conference and how we maintain trails.
Join the Westchester Trail Tramps for an introduction to trail maintenance and monitoring at Westmoreland Sanctuary in Mt. Kisco, NY. Westmoreland Resident Director Steve Ricker will join us to identify the common plants (including invasives), trees and bushes encountered in the Sanctuary. Be prepared for a 3 mile hike. Bring water and wear appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes. Best suited for older children and adults. RSVP by June 2 to crew leader Mary Dodds at [email protected] .
