Pelham Bay Park Cleanup and Trail Work

This Saturday there are a couple of volunteer activities occurring in Pelham Bay Park. The park took a big hit when Sandy came ashore. There are downed trees throughout the park and debris washed ashore at Orchard Beach. Volunteers spent hours on Saturday and Sunday working at Orchard Beach and are needed once again this weekend to continue clearing debris from along the north side of the promenade at Orchard Beach. In addition, the Friends of Pelham Bay Park, working with John Grayley, the Parks' Natural Areas Manager, are scheduled to continue with the installation of trail marker posts along the Kazimiroff Nature Trail on Hunter Island this Saturday, November 10th. Based on our last outing, we realized that the work involved (digging a deep hole in rocky soil, positioning the post, back-filling and tamping the soil) required a team of at least three volunteers to install a post. Therefore, I ask that you come and assist us in installing at least ten trail marker posts this Saturday.  However, should this exercise seem too daunting and you would rather not work in the woods, then I hope you would consider assisting in the ongoing clean up at Orchard Beach.    We will all be gathering in the northeast corner of the Orchard Beach parking lot at 9:30 AM. Remember to dress appropriately for the weather (layers are best) with sturdy footware. Don't forget to bring a lunch and a beverage.
