75th Annual Torrey Memorial Hike

  The 75th Annual Torrey Memorial hike up Long Mountain in Harriman State Park will be held Sunday, October 27, 2013. The traditional meeting time is about noon at the summit of Long Mountain; meet at the trailhead parking lot on Long Mountain Road GPS coordiniates 41.315548,-74.05004 at 11am. The hike honors an early 20th-century New York outdoor writer, fierce advocate for open space and parks, a founder of the Trail Conference, and a co-author of the first edition of the New York Walk Book, Raymond H. Torrey. A memorial to Torrey, who helped plan and create many of the most popular trails in the park, is engraved at the summit of Long Mountain. Torrey died in 1938. Hiking clubs and individuals are encouraged to plan to take the short hike, or include it in a longer hike, and be at the summit at about noon for a brief ceremony.
