Spot the Spotted Lanternfly Surveyor Workshop

Registration is closed for this event
Has all this heat and rain got you feeling a little "buggy"? Eager to get outdoors and make a difference in protecting our natural areas from invasive pests? You can put that "bugginess" to good use by taking this workshop to learn how to search for an emerging invasive insect pest, spotted lanternfly, in this fall's iteration of our Invasives Strike Force survey program called Spot the Spotted Lanternfly.

This workshop will prepare professionals and volunteers to scout for, identify and report adult Spotted Lanternfly (SLF), Lycorma delicatula, a serious pest that threatens both our ecological and agronomic resources in our region. The surveyor protocol and iMapInvasives and iNaturalist apps will be reviewed, which will be used to report the current distribution and abundance (or absence) of SLF adults in New York State. Identification information will also be provided for Tree of Heaven, Ailanthus altissima, the SLF’s favorite host. Following the workshop, volunteers will receive a survey assignment to search for spotted lanternfly and tree of heaven in and around parking areas of regional parks, their homes or near trailheads the lower Hudson Valley.
Pre-registration is required.
