Stewardship at the Trail Conference

Stewardship is one of those words that can have several meanings depending on the context. At the Trail Conference, stewardship means care of our preserved natural areas. We do this through many programs including our trail stewards who promote responsible use of the trails and “leave no trace” principles at several popular trail heads. But the larger program involves protection of the natural communities through several citizen science programs involving volunteers like you. The Invasives Strike Force surveys trails for invasive plants while the ISF Conservation Corp crew and ISF Trail Crew volunteers remove them. The Lower Hudson Partnership for Regional Invasive Species Management brings together all the organizations in the lower Hudson to coordinate efforts to remove invasives and promote natives across the region. The Appalachian Trail Natural Heritage Monitoring checks on the health of rare and endangered plant populations along the trail. The Southern Pine Beetle Trap Monitoring program provides an early detection of a new threat to our area. Our native plant habitat at the Trail Conference headquarters allows us to walk the walk and show how beautiful landscapes can be created using only native plants.  All these programs help us steward our forests and protect the native wildflowers, birds, bees, and butterflies. Thank you for being a part of it with us, and we look forward to your continued stewardship for years to come.

Exciting News for Our New Jersey Surveyors

Since the Invasive Strike Force began in 2011, dozens of dedicated volunteers have surveyed over 2,000 miles of trails in New York and New Jersey. This season, the last remaining trail segments in New Jersey have been assigned; with your help and continued diligence we hope to be able to say that the Invasive Strike Force has successfully surveyed our New Jersey region to completion! We have no doubt that our amazing ISF warriors will make this possibility a reality. Whether you're a returning suveyor or new to the force, together we can make this an amazing season!

New York State Invasive Species Awareness Week

Can’t get enough invasives? July 8-July 15 is Invasive Species Awareness Week (ISAW) in New York, and there are dozens of amazing events being offered throughout the Lower Hudson. ISAW promotes knowledge and understanding of invasive species and the harm they can cause by engaging citizens in a wide range of activities across the state, and empowering them to take action to stop the invasion! Check out the Lower Hudson PRISM calendar to find one near you.

ISF Crew: Come Get Your Hands Dirty!

The NYNJTC Invasives Strike Force Crew has volunteer work days where you can get in on the action and help us destroy the plants we all love to hate. Join us on any of the following dates in July for Invasive Species Awareness Week, or email invasives@nynjtc.org to be added to the ISF Crew mailing list and never miss a trip!
