A significant part of our income comes from the sales of books and maps. If we were to sell downloadable versions they would not be at a nominal cost but perhaps less than hardcopy costs because of less cost for the print medium. For example just the cost of the cartography on Walkable Westchester is $2 per book.
We are looking at the possibility of producing e-Books, but they will be complete books not pieces of books as that increases the production cost while lowering the demand.
Regional publishers don't sell that many copies so the costs have to be amortized over relatively few copies. We would love to be selling as many copies as A Walk in the Woods or Harry Potter, but that just isn't realistic.
All of the profits are plowed back into building and maintaining trails for the public. So you can think of part of the cost as a donation to a worth cause.
