MAHWAH, NJ (May 2, 2012) – The New York-New Jersey Trail Conference announces that it is working with Avenza Systems Inc., a leader in cartographic  software, to make its popular trail maps available to outdoor recreationalists and adventurers for use on iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches through Avenza’s award-winning PDF Maps app.  Trail Conference maps cover a network of more than 2,000 miles of public trails in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan area, and are the most reliable guides to outdoor adventure in the region.

The PDF Maps app is an all-encompassing solution for the use, distribution and sale of digital versions of paper maps to mobile devices. It includes both an app for consumers to use, discover, and purchase maps directly from their devices as well as an in-app store to facilitate the transaction and delivery of maps. Think of it as iTunes or iBooks for maps.

“More and more trail users are asking for maps on their mobile devices” said Edward Goodell, Executive Director of the Trail Conference.  “Avenza’s PDF Maps does a superb job of displaying our highly detailed maps on a mobile device.  Trail users get the best of both worlds.”

The Trail Conference is launching its venture into digital mapping with 20 trail maps that cover nearly 1,000 miles of trails throughout the region.  The available maps are a mix of trail maps available for purchase and available for free download via Avenza's PDF Maps app. The digital versions of the Trail Conference maps to be sold are identical to the maps that are printed on waterproof, tear-resistant Tyvek, but include a number of interactive features that allow hikers to use the maps like never before.  Each digital map contains geospatial information, such as real world location.  This geospatial information makes it possible to locate your position on a map, view satellite imagery for your location, and even measure distances right on the map. “We are extremely delighted to have this well-known and time-honored organization participate in the Avenza Map Store and are very excited to make their amazing series of maps available to mobile users,” said Ted Florence, President of Avenza Systems Inc. “Avenza produces MAPublisher® cartographic software for Adobe® Illustrator® and Geographic Imager® geospatial tools for Adobe Photoshop®.  Trail Conference maps are produced using Avenza's MAPublisher® software.

The PDF Maps app is available now on the iTunes App Store free of charge for personal use. For more information about the app, visit the Avenza website at www.avenza.com/pdf-maps. Each map is priced separately and free maps can be downloaded at no cost through the PDF Maps in-app map store.
