National Park Service Gives Tentative Approval to Power Line

Body

A major two-state electrical transmission line route would cross the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area where two utility companies want it, under a "preferred alternative" selected Thursday by the National Park Service.

The endorsement for using an existing utility right-of-way to cross the park near Bushkill at Fernwood Resort isn't final, the park service said, though the announcement was hailed by PPL Electric Utilities as a "major step forward." Environmentalists said the decision puts corporate interests ahead of protecting the environment.
