As for trails, Wawayanda is full of them. More than 60 miles of trails wander through the park, along with a nearly 20-mile section of the Appalachian Trail. Some of them are rough, hand-cut pathways, but many are old woods roads left over from the days when these woods were actively logged. The trails are maintained by members of the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference. Last year I volunteered to keep up one of them with my sister Margie. We were given the Banker Trail to tend; after one walk-through it was plain to see that we had plenty to do. Several hours and work sessions later, we can proudly say that we have widened the path, corrected errant blazes and cleared the trail of garbage and debris. Like I said before, I will take any excuse to spend the day out in the woods of Wawayanda.
