The Kittatinny Valley, also known as the Great Valley, is a relatively flat expanse situated between the Kittatinny Mountains to the west and the Highlands to the east. The land is generally well-suited for agricultural uses, and much of it remains as farmland today. However, portions of the valley are now protected as parkland and long sections of two abandoned railroads that pass through the valley have been converted to rail trails.
Parks and other hiking areas in this cluster include:
- Kittatinny Valley State Park
- Swartswood State Park
- Wallkill River National Wildlife Refuge
- Whittingham Wildlife Management Area
