Access Improvements at Onteora Lake in Bluestone Wild Forest and Allaben Access in the Shandaken Wild Forest

August 23, 2021

DEC will be joining forces with Ulster County DOT to improve road and parking access at both Onteora Lake in the Bluestone Wild Forest and at the Allaben Access in the Shandaken Wild Forest. While DOT performs work at these sites, visitor access will be limited.

Onteora Lake Access Improvements: Improvements will begin at Onteora Lake on Tuesday, August 24th, weather permitting. Work may continue through Tuesday, August 31st.

During this time, the gate that provides access to the lower parking area at Onteora Lake will be closed and locked prohibiting access to the lower parking area.  The main upper parking area at Onteora Lake will remain open as much as possible, but portions of the upper lot, including the entranceway to the upper parking area on NY Route 28, may be blocked off periodically in order to complete the work.  Please consider alternative options for recreating in the Forest Preserve during this time.

Allaban Access Improvements: While work is taking place at the Allaben access in the Shandaken Wild Forest, the 1/4 mile roadway entrance to the primitive campsites will not be accessible by vehicle. As an alternative, visitors may park at the Esopus creek fishing access directly across from the entranceway of the Allaben access, and walk to the campsites. Please use caution if you must access this portion of the Forest Preserve during construction. Our exact dates for construction at the Allaben access have not been solidified, but most likely will occur in early September shortly after the work at Bluestone Wild Forest has been completed.
