Surprise Lake rewards experienced hikers
Shortly thereafter, a glacially smoothed puddingstone rock outcrop provides views of Greenwood Lake. The rocks are red, grey and white with pebbles embedded within. According to George Petty's book Hiking the Jersey Highlands, this area was called Lookout Rock as early as 1923.
Pass the yellow trailhead to your right that you took on the way up, and continue back down the way you came. The hike covers 4.1 miles and takes about 3 and a half hours to complete according to the New York New Jersey Trail Conference.
