The Saddle River County Park consists of a string of five recreational locations along the Saddle River from Ridgewood south to Rochelle Park. At various sites there are picnic areas, pavilions, playgrounds, and facilities for sports including shuffleboard, soft ball, tennis, basketball, and roller hockey. The park’s five web sites [Contact Information] specify the recreational facilities for each site.

Trails Overview:

For hikers or walkers, the paved paths connecting these locations are the attraction, making possible a pleasant greenway on a nearly flat path along the Saddle River in the center of Bergen County with no street crossings for six miles.   A map published by the Bergen County Department of Parks is available on line.  Click to view a Trail Conference "Hike of the Week" starting from the Wild Duck Pond Area in Ridgewood south to Rochelle Park; scroll down the Parks column for "Saddle River County Park."

Directions:

The greenway is bound by Saddle River Road to its west and Paramus Road to its east [above Route 4].  The on-line trail map [link above] displays parking areas, as well as the terrain/street map at the top of this web page.

To reach the pathway by public transportation use NJ Transit Bus #163; see "Hike of the Week" [link above] for additional details to walk from the bus stop to the greenway.

"Bark Park"

A large fenced-in enclosure for a dog run has been added to a previously open field in the Wild Duck Pond section of the park in Ridgewood.  By some accounts "Bark Park" has become very popular with dog owners looking for a place to run their pets unleashed.  Not all are happy with the increased noise level and park usage [see "Your Views," The Record, October 11, 2009, p. O-3].
