Intro to Trail Maintenance

This indoor/outdoor training session covers an introduction to the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference and provides the skills necessary to maintain a hiking trail so it is easily passable and harmonious with its surroundings.   Participants will learn assessment of trail conditions, clearing, blazing, proper use of tools and how to report any trail problems they may come across on their segment of trail. Part of the afternoon will be in class, and also hiking the visitor center trails.  Be prepared for changeable weather.   Wear your hiking boots and work gloves - bring water and a bag lunch. If you have garden clippers, loppers or pruning saws, please being them.   We will go  to Bellvale Ridge or Fitzgerald Falls to practice on the Appalachian trail.   Ice creams at the Bellvale Creamery nearby are an option we could explore afterward.   No previous experience is necessary and all are welcome to attend to learn about the Trail Conference and how we maintain trails.
