Special Trail Conference Lark Event October 6

Join the Trail Conference and our Trail Partners on October 6 at 6:45pm at the Woodstock Community Center, 56 Rock City Road, Woodstock, to celebrate the Catskills 2011 Lark in the Park.

Award-winning essayist, and Trail Conference member, Will Nixon will join Ed Goodell, Executive Director of the Trail Conference, to look at hiking from two very different perspectives.

Just before their presentations, Willie Janeway, Region Three Director of New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), and Ed Goodell, will sign an `Adopt a Natural Resource’ agreement, replacing an earlier agreement that has allowed Trail Conference volunteers to maintain trails in the Catskills for the past 21 years. The new agreement strengthens this long-standing partnership and will foster more cooperation and support for trail maintenance in the Catskill Park. Other local officials are expected to participate.

The Trail Conference manages and maintains more than 300 miles of trail in the Catskill State Park’s forest preserve, and north along the Long Path, through volunteers and member clubs and organizations, such as the Catskill Mountain Club and Catskill 3500 Club.

Will Nixon, co-author (with Michael Perkins) of Walking Woodstock, a collection of adventures and hikers’ lore of walks through Woodstock, is expected to take a purist approach to hiking and share legendary tales of his adventures in the Catskills. Ed Goodell will discuss plans for improving trail systems throughout the region.

The lectures are part of the Annual Lark-in-the-Park, sponsored jointly by the Catskill Mountain Club and Catskill Center for Conservation and Development with the cooperation of the DEC and other trail partner organizations. The `Lark’ is a 10-day celebration of the Catskill Park, held since 2004 - the 100th anniversary of the park.

Lark-in-the-Park this year will feature more than 30 outdoor recreation activities, October 1-10, including hiking, paddling, fly fishing, cycling, and instructional programs. Most events are free of charge, requiring only advance registration. This year’s `Lark’ is dedicated to the Catskill Park’s recovery and support of local communities flood-relief efforts.
