National Park Service Appalachian Trail Volunteer Recognition

Trail Blazing

Did you know that there is a recognition program specifically for volunteers working on the Appalachian Trail? The National Park Service honors service performed on the A.T., based on the number of hours worked on the trail over a lifetime. Volunteers can receive:

8-99 hours: Volunteer pin

100-499 hours: Patch

500-999 hours: Cap with embroidered logo

1,000-1,999 hours: Black fleece vest

4,000 hours: Take Pride in America Presidential Award: certificate/plaque, lapel pin, letter from the President of the United States

In addition, volunteers who complete 250 hours of service can also receive a free pass to all national parks for one year. Once you receive your pass, your hour count toward the pass drops back to zero, and you can earn it again.
