Trail Conference Website Nets Award for Promoting Volunteerism
American Trails, a national nonprofit organization that works on behalf of all trail interests, has named the website of the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference as Best in 2010 in the category Recognition and Promotion of Volunteerism.
The Trail Conference launched its current website in March 2009. It has quickly become an essential tool for recruiting volunteers, organizing training, and scheduling trail projects. The website also provides, free to the public, detailed descriptions of hundreds of hikes, parks, and preserves in the New York-New Jersey region--all written by people with a passion for trails and accuracy.
In 2010, the Trail Conference fielded 1600 volunteers to assist managers of parks and other open space build and maintain trails, and to create the maps, books, web resources, and trail signage needed to provide enjoyable and safe trail experiences for the public.
Since 1920, the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference has partnered with parks to create, protect, and promote a network of more than 1,700 miles of public trails in the New York-New Jersey metropolitan region.
The Trail Conference is a nonprofit organization with a membership of 10,000 individuals and 100 organizations that have a combined membership of over 100,000 active, outdoor-loving people.
