The Open Space Institute (OSI) is working with the park on a number of projects in Fahnestock State Park. The major projects include:

  • Hubbard Perkins Loop Trail: Sections of School Mountain Road, the Hubbard Loop, the Clove Creek Trail, the Fahnestock Trail, the Perkins Trail, and the Wiccopee trail are being realigned and restored to form a new loop trail. The project includes a number of new bridges, some new trail sections, and improved signage. Work is now in progress and is expected to continue in phases through 2021 and 2022. Some trail sections will be closed from time to time for construction.
  • New Central Trailhead and Park Access: A new park road Big Woods Drive has been constructed north from Rt. 301 to a parking area located near the junction of the Perkins and Cabot trails and these trails will be rerouted and improved in this area. Construction is nearly complete and the road is expected to open in the spring of 2021. The Cabot Trail and part of the Perkins Trail, which were closed during the summer of 2020, are now reopened.
  • Appalachian Trail Improvements: A new paarking area is being constructed where the Appalachian Trail crosses Rt. 301 and the road crossing for the trail is being improved for greater safety. The work is expected to be completed in 2021.
