Mud? Ice? High water at stream crossings?

I know that hunting is permitted on some sections of Schunemunk Mountain but is it still safe to hike on any of the marked trails.  I am thinking specifically of the Long Path, Jessup, Barton Swamp.

The few times I have run into hunters hunting in the same area I am hiking, I have found them to be a reasonable, responsible, and cordial bunch.  As always in the fall, it is best to wear something that is a blaze orange color.  I use a blaze orange backpack rain cover (really stands out), but a blaze orange vest or even a blaze orange baseball cap will do.  I have purchased blaze orange clothing / gear at Cabelas.  Enjoy Schunemunk - it should be beautiful this time of year. Anyone know whether there's water at Bald Rocks? Normally, I'd expect that stream to be dry this time of year. However, it's been so wet lately, I wasn't sure if it's flowing. Thanks!

I hiked the following today:  Kakiat, White Bar, Triangle, Victory, White Cross, TMI, and R-D. Obviously not the entire trail for each, but the sections i hiked were in great shape with the following two exceptions: 1- there is a large blowdown about ½ mile into the Kakiat Trail from the trailhead in Tuxedo. I had to detour around it a good bit. 2- there is a blowdown on the White Cross Trail, about 15 minutes from the southern trailhead. I was able to climb over the trunks to the side, but not everyone will be up for this. This trail is also still pretty soggy in spots, and will require rock hopping, or prepare to have wet feet. Both of these blowdowns require a chainsaw crew- reports sent to the TC.

Does anyone have an update on conditions in the area of Twin, Sugarloaf, Indian Head Mtns? Wondering if this area is still closed.  Also, would like to find out about conditions of the roads in these areas, such as Route 214 from Phoenicia up to Devil's Tombstone campground, and the roads from Thruway exit 20 to the Platte Clove Rd, Prediger Rd area.  Thank you.  Ira

Hi Ira!

Please check our "Post-Irene Trails Update" page for information about trail and road closures in the Catskills due to the recent storms: http://www.nynjtc.org/news/postirene-message-hikers-trail-maintainers

Currently, all trails on DEC-managed property in Ulster and Greene counties are closed until further notice.

I just hiked Indian Head today...the trail had a few downed trees over the path. Nothing you can't get around...still muddy in many locations. Trailheads at Prediger Road and Platte Clove are both open as is Platt Clove Road coming from 33/35/212 (either exit 20 or from Woodstock). Hope you get out and enjoy it!

Honestly I haven't made my way over there yet, But what I've seen in other parts of the park - I would think it's gone / the bridge that sat over Stahahe Brook (By the Elks Pen) was 15' above the water line and thats gone & I believe all the bridges on the way to Pine Meadow are gone also ........ the park got hit hard - I've been out ever weekend since the storm covering 15 miles a day and I havent seen 1 bridge that is still standing

I was there on Sept 7. It was OK, I came by way of the Stahahe Brook Trail where the washed out stone bridge made for a challenging crossing. There were also lots of big blowdowns across the White Bar trail near its northern terminus.

Thanks for the info!

I read the report posted on the 14th concerning the condition of bridges in Harriman, but didn't see this one listed. I am referring to the bridge that's on the Appalachian Trail, just north of Island Pond. It crosses the stream that runs from Island Pond to Echo Lake. I haven't been to this area in a while, but i seem to remember that the bridge is mostly, or all concrete, so i'm hoping it withstood the storm. Any info would be appreciated- thanks!

One day service responding to a trail problem report at Bear Mt. Great work!

The downed wires in the 9W/Doodletown area have been cleared.  They had remained live after falling,  thus the park's concern previously.

Thanks for the update!

We are thru-hiking the AT SOBO (or trying to :-) ) and are wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a way around Long House Creek since the bridge is out.  We got stopped today at Little Dam Creek because the new stepping stones are 18-24 inches under a raging torrent!  Any thoughts on bypass routes would be really appreciated.

You'll have to walk the Orange turnpike to West Mombasha road and you can get the AT there (Just past the little pond on the right you'll see the AT
