Detailed Trail Description
0.0 Exit Stephens State Park and turn left uphill on Mine Hill Road (the white Patriots’ Path Blazes turn right, but this portion of the PP doesn’t connect to the rest of the trail.) Pass a gate at 0.2 miles and continue to Stephens Park Road.
0.9 Turn right on Stephens Park Road.
1.5 Turn right on Sand Shore Road.
2.0 Cross Route 46 at the light and continue straight ahead onto Naughright Road. Fast food and groceries are available at a shopping center here.
2.2 Turn right on Drakestown Road.
3.0 Turn left off of Drakestown Road into the woods at the HT/red trail trailhead on the left. Follow the HT/red trail 1.1 miles mostly downhill, across Reservoir Rd, a power line and reach the coaligned Highlands Trail/Patriot’s Path (HT/PP).
4.1 Follow the HT/PP .4 miles up to Reservoir Road. Turn right on Reservoir Road and walk uphill to the HT/PP trailhead on the right, just past Shadow Hill Way, 4.5 miles from Stephens State Park.
4.5 Turn right off of Reservoir Road into the woods on the HT/PP. Cross under power lines and continue uphill over wide switchbacks through woods and along what may be an old dam.
5.7 Come out in a neighborhood at the end of Sparrow Lane where you will see a PP post with directions for a short road walk.
5.8 Turn left uphill on Winay Terrace.
5.9 Turn right on Quail Run. Go about 100 feet on Quail Run to a left turn back onto the trail, which follows the power lines. Still under the power lines, cross straight over Hunter Road and shortly turn right off of the power line corridor. Pass through some brambly woods, come out to the edge of a school field, and follow the edge of the field out to Flocktown Road.
6.7 Cross Flocktown Road and enter a narrow strip of public land between houses. In a few tenths of a mile come out to Harrington Park. Turn left and follow the park entrance road out to Rock Road. Across Rock Road, you will see a PP post where the woods trail resumes. Follow the trail through level woods, mostly following pretty, flowing streams. The trail crosses wet areas on planks and crosses the streams several times – sometimes on bridges and sometimes without bridges. One large bridge has been washed out for years – requiring crossing the stream on foot.
8.0 Come out of the woods to a small parking area on East Springtown Road (3.5 miles from Reservoir Road trail head.) Turn left across a small bridge on E Springtown Road, and then quickly turn right.
8.1 The trail into Schooley’s Mountain Park begins on the right side of the road behind a small pump house. Follow the trail through fields, past the lower and upper parking lots, and the bathrooms.
8.4 The HT/PP re-enters the woods, heading down towards the Columbia Rail Trail.
