New York-New Jersey Trail Conference is thrilled to announce the completion of a major trail restoration project on the iconic Long Path through Tallman Mountain State Park in Rockland County, New York, led by the Long Distance Trails Crew. In honor of the achievement, we’re hosting a celebration—and you’re invited to join!
Our ribbon cutting ceremony will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at 10:00 AM, and everyone is welcome. The ceremony will include comments from the New York–New Jersey Trail Conference, members of the Long Distance Trails Crew, representatives from the Palisades Interstate Park Commission, and local officials.
The restoration project spanned approximately three years with volunteers building the trail using only traditional hand tools and rigging to move large rocks into place. The new trail is a huge improvement for access to the outdoors while preserving the breathtaking scenery of the Hudson River.
- Over 9,000 volunteer hours were spent on this project with over 50 individuals volunteering.
- The trail was built with 212 stone steps, each weighing between 300-600 pounds, placed along with 1300 sq feet of crib walls (retaining walls). Several platforms were built on the trail for people to rest and enjoy the sweeping views over the Hudson River.
