Darlington Schoolhouse

Darlington Schoolhouse:
A Historic Landmark with a Rich Past

1891 – The Beginning

The Darlington Schoolhouse was built as a gift to the Mahwah community, combining Shingle Style architecture with Romanesque and fieldstone design.

  • Built in 1891 by Alfred B. Darling & Theodore Havemeyer, influential businessmen in the area.
  • Designed by Dudley Newton, incorporating arched windows, fieldstone walls, and intricate woodwork.
  • Served as both a school and a community gathering space for decades.

Curious about how the Darlington Schoolhouse evolved over the years?

1891-1940s – A Center for Learning

For over 50 years, the Darlington Schoolhouse was a one-room schoolhouse, educating generations of children.

  • Provided education for local students in Mahwah, NJ.
  • Featured large windows, handcrafted woodwork, and a welcoming learning environment.
  • Closed in the 1940s as newer schools were built.
  • Left behind a legacy of education and community impact.

From a thriving community space to decades of neglect, the Darlington Schoolhouse has seen it all.

1940s-1970s – New Uses, Decline & Abandonment

Following its closure as a school, the building took on new roles before falling into disrepair.

  • Used as a dance studio, filling its halls with music.
  • Later became a carpentry shop, adapting to community needs.
  • Abandoned for nearly 40 years, suffering exposure to the elements.
  • Deteriorated into a forgotten relic until restoration efforts began.
