Restoration & Sustainability
at Darlington Schoolhouse

Phase 1: Structural Stabilization & Exterior Restoration (2012)

A Landmark with a Rich Past

The first phase of restoration focused on preserving the integrity of the original 1891 structure while ensuring it could stand strong for future generations.

  • Structural Reinforcement: The foundation has been reinforced to prevent further deterioration.
  • Exterior Restoration: The original fieldstone walls, arched windows, and slate roof were carefully repaired.
  • Climate Control Upgrades: A modern climate system was integrated seamlessly to prevent moisture damage while preserving historic authenticity.
  • Preservation of Architectural Details: Chestnut doors, Eastlake-style hardware, and slate chalkboards have been thoroughly restored.

Phase 2: Interior Restoration & Expansion (2015)

A Modern Headquarters with a Historic Heart

The second phase transformed the schoolhouse into a functional, modern headquarters while maintaining its historic charm.

  • Interior Renovations: The original 4,400 sq. ft. space was fully renovated, keeping key architectural features intact.
  • Sustainable Expansion: A 3,700 sq. ft., two-story addition was built, designed to complement the original structure.
  • Historic Meets Modern: The new addition provides meeting spaces, conservation training facilities, and office space, all while maintaining a low environmental footprint.
  • Accessibility Upgrades: A LULA (Limited Use/Limited Access) elevator was installed, making the building more accessible to visitors with mobility challenges.
