1891 – The Beginning
The Darlington Schoolhouse was built as a gift to the Mahwah community, combining Shingle Style architecture with Romanesque and fieldstone design.
- Built in 1891 by Alfred B. Darling & Theodore Havemeyer, influential businessmen in the area.
- Designed by Dudley Newton, incorporating arched windows, fieldstone walls, and intricate woodwork.

1891-1940s – A Center for Learning
For over 50 years, the Darlington Schoolhouse was a one-room schoolhouse, educating generations of children.

2007 – Saved from Neglect
By 2007, the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference & Mahwah Township took action to save the schoolhouse.
- Purchased to preserve its historic architecture and cultural value.
- Plans were developed to restore it as a hub for conservation and stewardship.
- Listed on the New Jersey & National Registers of Historic Places.
- A vision emerged to reimagine it as the NYNJTC headquarters.
2012 – Phase 1 Restoration Begins
The first major step in restoration stabilized the structure while preserving its historic charm.
- Foundation reinforced, preventing further structural damage.
- Fieldstone walls, roof, and arched windows restored with meticulous detail.
- Modern climate control systems are discreetly installed for protection.

2015 – A New Chapter as NYNJTC Headquarters
After years of restoration, the Darlington Schoolhouse was officially reopened as the home of NYNJTC.
