The Highlands Trail Guide

Highlands Trail Guide Introduction
Updated 6/11/24 – The Highlands Trail Guide is your go-to resource for planning hikes along the Highlands Trail. Below, you’ll find several maps linked, followed by detailed descriptions of each trail segment. We welcome your hike reports, questions, comments, suggestions, and any concerns. Please feel free to reach out to the volunteer Highlands Trail Chair at [email protected]
Important: Make sure to read the alerts for each section before you hike. These alerts provide critical updates, such as trail reroutes not reflected on your map or temporary closures. One alert even informs hikers that HT users are allowed to open a fence gate to access the trail. It’s essential to plan ahead, especially in areas with limited cell service, so you have all the information you need before heading out.
🚨 Trail Alert: Sterling Forest Closure 🚨
Affected Section: Goose Pond Mountain to Route 511
Due to the closure of Sterling Forest, hikers should be aware that this section of the Highlands Trail is currently inaccessible. While a general alert is posted on the Trail Conference home page, we are providing this HT-specific alert for clarity.
Until the closed section is reopened, hikers are encouraged to shuttle from the Sterling Ridge Trail trailhead on NY 17A in Tuxedo Park, NY, to the HT trailhead on Route 511 in New Jersey. Using such a shuttle during the closure will be considered a legitimate HT through-hike.
If you have any questions or require additional information, please contact Glenn Oleksak at [email protected] or Zachary Cole at [email protected].
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
