The Bear Mountain Trails Project:
A Trail-Building Masterpiece

Transforming the Most Popular Section of the Appalachian Trail

Bear Mountain is home to the most visited section of the Appalachian Trail (AT), attracting over 2 million visitors annually. Due to high foot traffic, this portion of the trail faced severe degradation, prompting the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference to launch one of the most ambitious trail restoration projects in AT history.

A Multi-Year Restoration Effort

To preserve this historic section of the AT, the Trail Conference embarked on a 14-year project that involved thousands of volunteers and countless hours of work. The result is a sustainable, world-class hiking trail that enhances both conservation and visitor experience.

Key Achievements:

  • Installed 1,300+ hand-cut granite steps to prevent erosion and improve accessibility.
  • Constructed sustainable trail structures to withstand high foot traffic.
  • Created an interpretive exhibit, Trails for People, to educate visitors about trail-building techniques.

The Power of Volunteers

More than 3,000 volunteers dedicated over 85,000 hours to making this project a reality. From stone cutting to trail design, their efforts were instrumental in transforming this section of the AT.
